There is another side to coin, which is importing data into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.xlmsolutions.com\/es\/3dexperience\/\"><b>3D<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EXPERIENCE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when you have real-world constraints:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source system is not fully supported by standard migration tools<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CAD type is not yet supported in a given migration path<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to integrate enterprise systems and create or update structures programmatically<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are operating in a cloud environment where the tooling model is different than on-prem<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During Dassault\u2019s recent migration and openness training, we spent significant hands-on time with EIF. The most valuable piece for me, considering that we already actively use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.xlmsolutions.com\/es\/blog\/streamlining-integration-a-closer-look-at-3dexperiences-enterprise-integration-framework\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EIF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was a deeper walkthrough of how STEP AP242 XML (STPX) fits into import workflows and why understanding it matters when you go beyond standard tooling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This post is a technical, implementation-oriented view of what\u2019s worth knowing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6888 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.xlmsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/264-300x157.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><b>EIF: Why It Becomes The Option When Standard Tools Stop<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dassault\u2019s standard tools (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.xlmsolutions.com\/es\/blog\/best-practices-for-loading-solidworks-data-into-3dexperience\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EDAT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for on-premise; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.xlmsolutions.com\/es\/blog\/new-tool-streamlines-data-migration-to-3dexperience-on-the-cloud\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transition Assistant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on-cloud; 3D XML paths in the right scenarios) cover many migrations, but not all. In practice, EIF becomes the right answer when:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have a cloud-first program and need a consistent integration approach<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to bring in data from systems that do not have a \u201csupported migration tool\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to address scenarios where supported tooling does not cover your CAD type or data model shape<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need repeatable import logic for incremental data movement, not just one-time migration<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EIF is not just a migration mechanism. It\u2019s also an integration framework. That distinction matters because a lot of programs look like \u201cmigration\u201d on paper but behave like \u201congoing integration\u201d in execution.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>STEPX (STPX): A Standard Format With Real Implications For Imports<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A key focus of the hands-on work was STEP AP242 XML, commonly referenced as STEPX with file extension .stpx.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve worked with EDAT\u2019s XPDM XML or 3DXML, you\u2019ve already seen XML-based data representations in the Dassault ecosystem. STEPX is different for one major reason:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not a Dassault-specific format. It is an industry standard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That standardization can be an advantage when data needs to move between systems that already support STEP-based representations. It also comes with a tradeoff: STEPX is powerful and flexible, but the schema is more complex than most \u201cplatform-native\u201d migration formats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In training, we worked through the underlying schema concepts and then connected them back to how Dassault leverages STEPX within EIF import processes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where the value is: if you are building imports, you need to understand the structure you\u2019re generating or transforming. Otherwise you end up debugging through trial and error.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>What Changes When You Focus On Imports Instead Of Exports<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exports are typically about extraction and reporting. With exports, normally the import of the extracted data into an external system is not part of the <\/span><b>3D<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EXPERIENCE effort. Imports require decisions that affect downstream behavior in <\/span><b>3D<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EXPERIENCE:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How objects will be created and related<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How metadata maps to the target data model<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How revisions, maturity states and ownership are handled<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How CAD and product structure align (or don\u2019t)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How you handle incremental updates without duplicating or corrupting data<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those decisions are exactly where projects slow down, and exactly why import-oriented training is valuable even for experienced teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A practical takeaway from the training: if you expect \u201cstandard tooling\u201d to cover every import scenario in cloud programs, you will eventually run into a case where it does not. When that happens, STEPX knowledge and EIF import capability are the difference between \u201cwe\u2019re blocked\u201d and \u201cwe have a path.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6891 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.xlmsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/265-300x157.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"424\" height=\"222\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><b>Where This Matters Most: A Few Real Scenarios<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are scenarios where this import focus tends to show up in real programs:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Scenario 1: Unsupported CAD in a legacy system moving to cloud<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current 3DX XTA tool supports SmartTeam data migration for CATIA and AutoCad but if your SmartTeam environment includes other CAD data that is not supported, you may need custom migration logic. EIF import flows can become the route, with STEPX used as the structured payload to load CAD data that isn\u2019t supported out of the box.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Scenario 2: File system to cloud, with constraints<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">File-based migrations are rarely just \u201cload files.\u201d The structure, metadata and relationships matter. If your path is not fully supported by the current release\u2019s standard tooling, EIF may be required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Scenario 3: Integration that looks like migration<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many companies start with a \u201cmigration\u201d goal but end up needing ongoing data movement across enterprise systems, suppliers, or multiple<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.xlmsolutions.com\/es\/3dexperience\/\"><b>3D<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EXPERIENCE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> environments. That is not a one-time event. It is an operating model.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Practical Guidance: How to Approach EIF Import Work Without Creating Risk<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re considering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.xlmsolutions.com\/es\/blog\/streamlining-integration-a-closer-look-at-3dexperiences-enterprise-integration-framework\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EIF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> imports, the best way to reduce risk is to treat it like engineering:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start with a narrow, testable scope (a representative subset, not the full dataset)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define mapping rules explicitly (don\u2019t \u201cfigure it out in code\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Validate object behavior (relationships, revisions, maturity states, access controls)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Test incrementally (repeatable runs, consistent outputs, measurable performance)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan for governance (who owns mappings, who approves changes, who monitors outcomes)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not about making it complicated. It\u2019s about keeping it controlled.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Closing: Continuing Education is Key for Execution Quality<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Training like this is valuable because it forces you into the details you only hit when you\u2019re doing real work, especially on the import side. It also reinforces that \u201csupported tooling\u201d is not a strategy by itself.
