ENOVIA SmarTeam Is Not Dead. It’s Mature. (And Still Doing Its Job)

ByMarc Young

In this blog, xLM Solutions’ Marc Young explains why ENOVIA SmarTeam remains supported and how xLM continues to help customers maintain, upgrade, and extend SmarTeam environments with confidence.

In the PLM world, there is no shortage of noise around cloud, SaaS, and platform-based solutions. If you only listen to the broader market conversation, you might assume long-standing systems like ENOVIA SmarTeam have quietly faded away. That’s not what we see in practice. SmarTeam remains the system of record for hundreds of engineering teams. It is stable, deeply integrated into CATIA V5, SOLIDWORKS and other CAD systems, has good workflows for engineers to handle company processes, like engineering change, and continues to do exactly what many organizations need it to do. That longevity doesn’t make it obsolete — it makes it mature. I always see SmarTeam as a good work horse; it may not be the prettiest and most modern application, but it does work and allows companies to manage their product (engineering data) and lifecycle. Managing a mature system, however, comes with its own set of challenges, especially as the surrounding IT landscape continues to evolve. At xLM Solutions, we are one of the few partners who don’t simply “keep SmarTeam running.” We actively support it, upgrade it, and extend it. SmarTeam still is officially supported by Dassault and there is no end of life or end of support dates for it. From what we have always been told, SmarTeam is on the V5 architecture and as long as the V5 products like CATIA are supported so will SmarTeam. — because for many customers, SmarTeam is still mission-critical.  And when organizations are ready to move forward, we also support SmarTeam-to-3DEXPERIENCE migrations or simple data extractions out of SmarTeam or migrations to other systems. We do this based on our deep understanding of the SmarTeam system.

The Reality of SmarTeam Support

Let’s clear up a common point of confusion. Yes, SmarTeam is still supported under Dassault Systèmes, though Dassault is not putting much R&D effort into it. Users are seeing less  frequent feature enhancements or new functionality, even though SmarTeam is still maintained for newer operating systems, databases and CAD versions What it does not mean is that SmarTeam no longer requires active maintenance. While the application itself may be stable, the environment around it is constantly changing. Running SmarTeam on older hardware or IT systems can lead to issues, such as:
  • Older version of windows can become unsupported and introduce client compatibility challenges
  • Older databases can have vulnerabilities and impact database performance
  • Security requirements continue to evolve, including TLS standards and authentication expectations
Left unaddressed, these changes can quietly introduce risk into an otherwise well-understood system. This is where xLM typically gets involved. We regularly support customers through upgrades to the latest supported SmarTeam releases, database and infrastructure updates, and alignment with modern IT and security requirements. The goal isn’t transformation for its own sake — its long-term stability and supportability.

SmarTeam Support

At xLM, our team provides SmarTeam support and work, whether this is proactive maintenance to keep it running with optimal performance, being a company's help desk for when users have issues or changes or daily, monthly or annual tasks that involve SmarTeam. We are here to be part of your time to support it for you.

Yes, We Still Customize SmarTeam

Many partners moved on from SmarTeam years ago. We didn’t. Our team continues to work directly in SmarTeam — writing Business Scripts, customizing profile cards, adjusting lifecycle graphs, and refining workflows. As customer processes evolve, the data model and automation supporting those processes often need to evolve as well. Our team is  still developing customizations on SmarTeam for customers to improve their business processes. Common examples of the work we still do include: SmarTeam may be mature, but for many organizations it is still very much a living system — and it benefits from thoughtful, experienced hands.

Why This Matters for the Future

Even for teams that plan to remain on SmarTeam for the foreseeable future, proper support and stewardship matter. Stable systems stay stable because someone understands how they work — not because they are ignored. And when the time eventually comes to consider a migration to 3DEXPERIENCE or another system, deep SmarTeam knowledge becomes even more important — and it’s where xLM’s experience matters most. Successful transitions depend on understanding the structure, relationships, and history inside the system you’re moving from — not just the platform you’re moving to. We’ve helped many customers migrate from SmarTeam to 3DEXPERIENCE, which you can read more about in examples here and here.

The Bottom Line on SmarTeam

If SmarTeam continues to meet your needs, there is no reason to rush into change. What you do need is a partner who understands how to keep it secure, supported, and aligned with modern infrastructure expectations. At xLM Solutions, SmarTeam has never been an afterthought. It’s a system we know well, continue to support, and help customers rely on with confidence. Planning a SmarTeam upgrade or project? Our team is here to help – get in touch today.
